How good initiatives go bad …

The challenge for Sunshine Electricity now is to stay solvent until the REC program is changed. The mills can burn the gas for half the year, but they need wood waste. The fuel’s out there, it’s just that under State Government rules, Sunshine Electricity can’t have it.

There’s frustration that native forest cleared for roads and residential developments can be burnt on site, but not for power, and that it’s illegal to divert the thousands of tonnes of wood from the demolition sector that goes to landfill every year to the mill.
